Trauma Affects More Than the Way You Remember an Event

It can influence what you believe about yourself, what you expect from others, how you respond when you feel threatened, and how safe you feel in your own body. You may know logically that you're safe now, but your body may still react as though you aren't.

Through EMDR, we can work together to process the experiences and beliefs that continue to affect you. Over time, this may help you move from negative beliefs toward a more compassionate and grounded understanding of yourself:

“I am enough.”
“I did the best I could with what I knew at the time.”

“I am safe now.”
“I can trust myself.”

The goal isn't to erase your past or pretend that difficult things didn't happen. It's to help those experiences feel like something that happened to you, not something that is continuing to happen to you.

EMDR Therapy Can Be Helpful If You Are Struggling With:

- Trauma or PTSD
- Anxiety or feeling constantly on edge
- Difficult or overwhelming life experiences
- Grief and loss
- Relationship or attachment wounds
- Low self-esteem or negative beliefs about yourself
- Major life transitions
- Experiences that continue to affect you long after they happened

You do not have to have one defining traumatic event to benefit from EMDR. Sometimes it is the accumulation of experiences from painful relationships, childhood experiences, betrayal, loss, medical experiences, major changes, or years of having to be the strong and dependable one that leave you feeling stuck.

What Can You Expect After EMDR?

Healing doesn’t always mean forgetting what happened. It means being able to remember your experiences without feeling like you’re right back in them.

After EMDR, you may notice that situations that once felt overwhelming don't have the same emotional charge. A memory may still be there, but it may feel more distant—like something that happened in the past, rather than something your body is still experiencing now.

You may notice:

- Less emotional intensity around painful memories or triggers
- A calmer nervous system
- Fewer automatic survival responses
- More awareness of your emotions and needs
- Greater confidence in your own decisions
- Less shame, guilt, or self-blame
- Healthier boundaries

EMDR is not about making you forget your past. It's about helping your brain and nervous system process what happened so you can experience the present differently.

Move Beyond What You Have Been Carrying

EMDR is about more than simply reducing symptoms. It's about helping you reconnect with yourself. As you process what you've been carrying, you may feel less controlled by old reactions and more able to choose how you respond.

You may develop greater self-trust, feel safer in your body, recognize your needs more clearly, and understand yourself with greater compassion.

Ultimately, the goal is to help you move from survival to self-trust and from feeling defined by what you've experienced to feeling grounded in who you are today.

You don't have to forget what happened to feel differently about it. You can heal from the experience and stop allowing it to define who you are so you are able to begin to feel like yourself again.
